Marian Schoettle and Kate Hamilton have been collaborating in WSW’s papermaking studio constructing wearable paper garments that re-interpret two local legends: The Leatherman and Sojourner Truth. The Leatherman was a peddler who walked a monthly circular route and was reportedly mute. Sojourner Truth was an activist and orator, and a former slave.
The two artists came to WSW as part of our Ora Schneider regional artist grant program and have spend their time here exploring handmade paper as a sculptural medium. Their paper garment sculptures combine found documents, synthetic materials, letterpress printing, and lithography with handmade paper. The project will culminate in an art event in Rosendale’s Widow Jane mine in 2013.
