Scotland: Printing at the Edge

Imagine endless sky, rugged shores, exquisite long, long days and lingering sunsets. Imagine a cozy room, in a working lighthouse, miles from any town. Imagine yourself and a group of like minded artists making paper and printing, transforming your observations into a unique artist’s book. This 9 day extraordinary experience, including the longest day of the year, is the latest addition to WSW’s international programs.

Our Italy based Program coordinator, Susan Fateh came across Rubha Reidh – Gaelic for “smooth point” (pronounced Rooa Ray) this magical place, while searching suitable workshop sites in her native Scotland. Built in 1910 by a cousin of the writer Robert Louis Stevenson, Rubha Reidh is located on the West Coast of Scotland, faces the Isles of Skye and the Hebrides which are clearly visible on most days, and is witness to a wealth of wildlife such as otter, seal, dolphin, basking shark the occasional whale and many types of birds.

Nestle into the cheerful accommodations of the fully renovated Lighthouse Keeper’s Quarters. Two rooms will be single-occupancy and three are double-occupancy. A spacious, stone-flagged conservatory will serve as studio. Meals will be taken outdoors whenever possible.

Printing at the Edge

Inspired by our fabulous surroundings, we’ll create artwork that explores the expansive views and the timelessness of the site. Taking the water’s edge as a starting point, we’ll concentrate on making a series of pieces, paying particular attention to the idea of edges and edginess, in all its possible permutations. We’ll explore this concept with handmade paper with its irregular deckled edge, trace monoprints, stencil printing, traditional monoprints and chine-collé incorporating additional found material into our prints. We will work on a modest scale and explore the potential of long accordion artists’ books as a form, which can be both intimate and expansive.

  • group transportation to and from Inverness will be provided
  • a day trip to the nearby Inverewe Garden & Estate, a lush, tropical oasis perched on a peninsula at the edge of Loch Ewe amid the rugged landscape of Wester Ross. This historic garden was created out of bare rock and a few scrub willows in 1862 by Osgood Mackenzie. It’s full of colorful, exotic plants from around the world. Highlights include the most northerly planting of rare Wollemi pines, Himalayan blue poppies, olearia from New Zealand, Tasmanian eucalypts, and rhododendrons from China, Nepal and the Indian subcontinent. These plants flourish thanks to the warm currents of the Gulf Stream and the foresight of Osgood Mackenzie, who planted over 100 acres of woodland to shelter the garden.

About our Instructors

Tatana Kellner, WSW’s Artistic Director has been printing, assembling images and making artists’ books for over 35 years. An accomplished artist and teacher, Tana exhibits extensively, this past summer at the Everson Museum in Syracuse, NY, the Dorsky Museum at SUNY New Paltz and the Art Museum at SUNY Albany, NY. She is the recipient of a Krasner Pollack Grant and 3 NYFA individual artist grants among others.www.tatanakellner.com

Susan Fateh draws on influences from a mixed cultural heritage and upbringing. She holds a BA/Hon. from Scotland and an MFA from NYU. She studied with Sheila Marbain, founder and Master Printer of Marbain Studios; with Krishna Reddy at NYU; and with SW Hayter at Atelier 17 in Paris. Susan’s fascination with the infinite bas-relief possibilities of etching led into a passion for hand papermaking, an art she practices in her studio in southern Tuscany. Susan’s works have been exhibited and commissioned in many countries over the years and she has been involved in papermaking projects in Tamil Nadu, Jordan and Trinidad.
